How Long Does It Take to Memorize the Quran?

How long it takes to memorize the Quran: 604 pages divided by your daily amount

How long does it take to memorize the Quran? The short answer: if you memorize one page a day, five days a week, you will finish the Quran in about two years and four months. At two pages a day you finish in about one year and two months, and at five verses a day you need close to five years.

So the time is not one number that fits everyone. It is a simple calculation you make yourself: your daily amount, your days per week, and what you have already memorized. This guide gives you the formula, a calculator to test your plan, and a ready table of common amounts. Then we talk about the thing that decides whether you actually get there: revision.

The Formula for Your Timeline

The Madinah Mushaf, which most people memorize from, has 604 pages, 6,236 verses and 30 Juz, each Juz being about 20 pages. So the calculation is:

Memorization days = 604 ÷ your daily amount in pages Then spread those days across the memorization days in your week.

Example: one page a day = 604 memorization days. If you memorize five days a week, that is 604 ÷ 5 = about 121 weeks, or roughly two years and four months.

If you count in verses: one page has about 10 verses on average, so five verses a day is close to half a page.

Try your own plan:

Calculate when you will finish memorizing the Quran

How much do you memorize a day?
How many days a week?

You will finish, God willing, in about

4 years and 8 months

That is around Haziran 2031 if you start today.

An estimate based on the Madinah Mushaf (604 pages). Review time is not included, so set a fixed share for it every day.

Timeline by Daily Amount

This table is calculated on the whole Mushaf (604 pages), not counting days of pure revision or breaks:

Daily amount5 days a week6 days a weekEvery day
3 verses8 years6 years and 8 months5 years and 8 months
5 verses4 years and 9 months4 years3 years and 5 months
Half a page4 years and 8 months3 years and 10 months3 years and 4 months
One page2 years and 4 months1 year and 11 months1 year and 8 months
Two pages1 year and 2 months1 year10 months

Read the table from top to bottom, not across: the big difference comes from the daily amount. Going from five days to seven saves only a little, and it takes away your two revision days. That is why we advise most people to memorize five days and revise for two.

Why Do Some People Finish Faster Than Others?

Memory is not the only reason. These factors change your timeline more than memory does:

  • Reading well before memorizing. If you stumble over the words, half your time goes to reading rather than memorizing. Correcting your recitation first saves you months later.
  • Consistency, not enthusiasm. Five verses every day for a year is more than two pages a day for two weeks followed by a stop. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent, even if they are few." [Bukhari and Muslim]
  • Reciting to someone who corrects you. A mistake you memorize alone stays with you, and fixing it months later takes longer than memorizing it the first time.
  • Understanding the general meaning. When you know what the verses are about, they connect to one another and the sequence is easier to remember.
  • Repeated wording in the Quran. Many words and phrases repeat across the Quran, so memorizing gets faster as you advance. A page that takes you an hour in the first month may take half that after a year.

And Allah has promised this:

﴿وَلَقَدۡ يَسَّرۡنَا ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ لِلذِّكۡرِ فَهَلۡ مِن مُّدَّكِرٖ﴾ "And We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember, so is there anyone who will be mindful?" [Al-Qamar: 17]

The Right Timeline for Each Age

The numbers here are starting amounts our teachers suggest, and they grow with commitment:

AgeSuitable starting amountHow to memorizeApproximate time to finish
4 to 6 years1 to 3 versesBy listening and repeating, starting with Juz AmmaNo rush to finish; the goal is Juz Amma and Juz Tabarak
7 to 12 years3 verses to half a pageReading from the Mushaf with a teacher4 to 6 years
13 to 18 yearsHalf a page to one pageReading, self-repetition and organized revision2.5 to 4 years
Working adult3 verses to half a pageA fixed session before work or after Fajr4 to 6 years
Full-time learner1 to 2 pagesA daily program with a teacher1 to 2 years

The times in this table assume the amount rises gradually with commitment, as it usually does.

A young child should not be measured by time at all: if they master Juz Amma and love the Quran, they have already won. We wrote a full guide for them: Juz Amma memorization for kids.

Revision: The Time the Table Does Not Show

The table above counts new memorization only. In reality, revision time grows as your memorized portion grows, and most people who plan do not count this.

What you have memorizedSuggested daily revisionApproximate time
Less than 5 JuzThe last 7 days + a quarter Juz of older material15 to 20 minutes
5 to 15 JuzThe last 7 days + half a Juz of older material30 to 40 minutes
More than 15 JuzThe last 7 days + a full Juz of older material45 to 60 minutes

One rule protects your memorization: revise before anything new, always. If your day gets tight, skip the new portion and keep the revision, not the other way round. The most useful place to revise is in prayer: recite what you have memorized in your voluntary prayers and at night, and you revise without carving out separate time.

This is why we say: do not calculate your timeline from the table alone. Add about 10% to 20% for days of pure revision, busy periods and travel. If you plan for two years and four months, prepare yourself for about two and a half to three years.

Can You Memorize the Quran in One Year?

Yes, but with honest math: one year takes two pages a day, six days a week. That means about an hour and a half to two hours every day for memorizing, plus an hour of revision in the second half of the year.

  • Suits: someone with free time (a student on a long break, or someone joining an intensive program) who reads fluently and has a teacher listening every day.
  • Does not suit: someone who works full-time and has never memorized before. They should start with half a page and raise the amount after two months if it sticks.

Finishing in three or six months takes three to seven pages a day, which means a full day for the Quran. These are intensive programs with their own supervision. And fast memorization without revision is forgotten just as fast.

A Ready Plan: Finish in Two Years and Four Months

This plan is for someone who reads fluently and can give an hour a day:

DayNew memorizationRevision
Saturday to WednesdayOne page (30 to 45 minutes)The last 7 days + a share of older material, before the new page
ThursdayNothing newEverything from this week, then recite it to a teacher
FridayNothing newA larger share of older material, and listening to a skilled reciter

In every session with new material, follow the same order: listen to the page three times, read it from the Mushaf ten times, then memorize it verse by verse and connect each verse to the one before it. We explain this method in detail, with a first-week plan for beginners, in how to start memorizing the Quran.

Mistakes That Make It Take Longer

  • Starting with a large amount. Most people who stop started with two pages. Start with less than you can manage, and raise it once you have held steady for a month.
  • Dropping revision to finish faster. You finish faster on paper, then discover that half of what you memorized is gone.
  • Changing your Mushaf. Visual memory stores where each verse sits on the page. Memorize from one edition and do not change it.
  • Memorizing without reciting to anyone. With no one listening, small mistakes stay for years.
  • A long stop after an excuse. Missed a day? Do not make up for it by doubling tomorrow. Just continue your plan as it is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I memorize the Quran after 40?

Yes, and many people have finished after 40 and 50. An adult understands the meaning and organizes time better than a child, and so makes up with understanding and regularity for any speed they may lack. Start with 3 verses to half a page. What matters is that you do not stop.

How many hours do I need per day?

For one page, 30 to 45 minutes for new memorization and 15 to 60 minutes for revision, depending on how much you have memorized. For five verses, 20 minutes of new memorization is enough at the start.

Does a child memorize faster than an adult?

A child picks up the wording quickly and keeps it for a long time, but has little energy for a long session, so the daily amount is smaller. An adult is slower with the wording but better at long sessions and organized revision. The result is that the timelines come close, and the real difference is regularity.

I stopped for a month. Do I start over?

No. Revise what you have memorized until it is firm, then continue with new material from where you stopped. One or two weeks of pure revision is usually enough after a month away.

Should I memorize by verses or by pages?

Start with verses if you are a beginner, since they are easier to divide. Move to the full page once half a page feels easy. Memorizing by the page fixes the image of the page in your memory and makes your plan easier to calculate.

Start Today, and the Road Gets Shorter

The shortest way to finish is not a large amount. It is the day you do not skip. Choose an amount you can manage every day, put revision before anything new, and have someone listen to you. After two months you will find that what took an hour takes less, and you can raise your amount.
